National Center for Health Workforce Analysis: Area Resource File

Area Resource File (ARF) is a health resource information system that enables policymakers, researchers, planners and others to analyze the current state of health care access at the county level. The ARF database contains more than 7,000 variables for each county in the U.S., including geographic codes and classifications; health professions supply and detailed demographics; health facility numbers and types; hospital utilization; population characteristics and economic data; environment; and health professions training resources.

ARF comprises data collected from more than 50 sources and is the result of processing millions of micro data records including detailed mortality and natality records from the National Center for Health Statistics, physician specialty data from the American Medical Association, and facilities data from the American Hospital Association.

Additional data is regularly incorporated into the ARF database, which is updated and issued annually. ARF may be purchased on CD-ROM, magnetic tape or 3480 cartridge. Find out more about ARF and/or order custom reports, files and maps.
