National Dissemination Center for Career and Technical Education The Ohio State University Columbus, Ohio 43210-1090 For Immediate Release Dr. Mark David Milliron, Executive Director, Education Practice, SAS Institute, Inc; Dr. Steven Lee Johnson, President, Sinclair Community College; and Dr. Jerry Sue Thornton, President, Cuyahoga Community College, will present "Emerging Roles for Community Colleges" during a webcast from the National Dissemination Center for Career and Technical Education, The Ohio State University, 3:00 p.m. EDT, Thursday, October 21, 2004. Milliron, Johnson, and Thornton will explore what's in store for community colleges as they continue to move forward in the 21st. century. By drawing on data from three national studies of more than 700 CEOs and highlighting best practices from League for Innovation in the Community College initiatives, this conversation will offer a wide view of the challenges and choices facing the administration, faculty, staff, and students, as a renewed community college education emerges. The panel will bring special emphasis to a host of issues including changing enrollment patterns; public, and private-sector partnerships; funding challenges and opportunities; teaching, reaching, and leadership transitions; high-tech/high-touch creativity and convergence; and dialogues on learning and certification. As Executive Director of Education Practice for the SAS Institute, Dr. Milliron brings a strong and varied background as an educator. He was the President and CEO of the League for Innovation in the Community College -- an international consortium of more than 750 colleges in 15 countries pushing the cutting edge in technology, leadership development, workforce development, fundraising, learning-centered education, and K- 20 transition programs. Dr. Milliron also served as the Executive Director of Global Learning Initiatives with Oracle Corporation and was the Vice President of Academic and Student Services at Mayland Community College, North Carolina. He earned his Masters in Organizational Communication from Arizona State University and his PhD in Educational Administration from the University of Texas, Austin. Dr. Steven Johnson is the President of Sinclair Community College, a comprehensive community college serving 23,000 students and 65,000 corporate and community-service participants annually. Dr. Johnson was Provost and COO at Sinclair prior to becoming President. He has a Masters of Science in Higher Education Administration from Iowa State University and a PhD from The University of Texas, Austin. Dr. Jerry Sue Thornton is President of Cuyahoga Community College, a multi-campus district. During her tenure, the College has established technology centers at each campus, launched the Corporate College® initiative, and vastly improved financial aid opportunities for students. Dr. Thornton's service on boards and the many awards and honors she has received, reflect her commitment to the education profession and service to the community. She holds a Bachelor and Master of Arts degree from Murray State University in Kentucky and a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin.
