Students and Teachers, Make This Your Summer of Science!!!

June 5 Update : NIH grantees are beginning to receive their award notifications. This process may take several weeks. Please continue to check this site for updated information about summer research opportunities. We appreciate your patience.

The 2009 Recovery Act is creating summer research opportunities for high school and college students and teachers at biomedical laboratories across the United States. A number of NIH-funded researchers have funds available to support a limited number of summer research interns.

The NIH has developed this Web site to help you find research opportunities in your area. The details of each internship are strictly determined between the hosting scientist or institution and the individual student or teacher. There is a short window of time between when an award is funded and when an opportunity begins, so we encourage you to contact participating laboratories soon.

What kind of summer laboratory opportunities are available?

  • Student Summer Opportunities NIH wants to encourage students to seriously pursue research careers in health-related sciences. This is a unique opportunity for students to be a member of a research team. If you are a high school or college student with an interest in pursuing a science lab experience this summer, you are encouraged to contact participating laboratories soon.

  • Teacher Summer Opportunities Under this program, NIH-funded researchers and institutions may also host elementary, middle, and high school teachers, as well as college faculty, in short-term research experiences. The aim is to facilitate the professional development of teachers and help them foster in their students a lifelong interest in science.

How can I find a summer laboratory opportunity in my local area?

Use our search engine above to find summer laboratory opportunities in your local area. Enter your ZIP code and the distance (in miles) you are willing to travel. All scientists and institutes that appear on your list have registered with us and indicated that they applied for and/or already received funds for these summer opportunities. You can then email the contact person to inquire about available opportunities and the application process for that institution.

You must contact the person listed for individual laboratories. Application procedures will vary. Use the search feature above to generate a list of opportunities in your local area.

How are these opportunities funded?

In an effort to strengthen our nation to meet the challenges of the 21st century, President Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) on February 17, 2009. Many, but not all, of these research opportunities are funded by ARRA.
