Founding director Robert Wilson put his personal stamp on every aspect of Fermilab: buildings, colors, sculpture, the landscape—even the twists and turns of roads through the woods.

He created a strong template for subsequent generations of design and designers, but he could not have envisioned the explosion of possibilities in outlets such as the Internet. The Fermilab Design Task Force established a Graphics Subcommittee, which was asked to reconnect the current Fermilab "state of the art" of graphics with Wilson's original vision, while incorporating his revolutionary approach to particle accelerators: use highest standards of the time, and build in allowances for advances in the future. The subcommittee's goal: to reinforce and revitalize the unity of Fermilab's distinctive graphics presentations.
