The NHSDA Report:   Academic Performance and Youth Substance Use

Highlights:

  • Youths who received grades of D or below last semester were more likely than those with higher grades to have used cigarettes, alcohol, or illicit drugs during the past month.
  • Youths with an A or B average in school were more likely to have used alcohol than any other substances during the past month, but youths with a D or less than D average were more likely to have used cigarettes than other substances during this time period.
  • The likelihood of participating in two or more youth activities (such as Scouts, church choir, team sports, school band, and school clubs) was highest for youths with an A average and lowest for youths with a D or less than D average.

This Short Report, The NHSDA Report:   Academic Performance and Youth Substance Use, is based on SAMHSA's  National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA), now called the  National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH).  The survey is conducted by the Office of Applied Studies (OAS) in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).  SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) is the primary source of information on the prevalence, patterns, and consequences of drug and alcohol use and abuse and for selected mental health measures in the general U.S. civilian non institutionalized population, age 12 and older.   SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use & Health also provides estimates for drug use and for selected mental health measures by State.
