The International Cultural Property Protection program enables the U.S. to enter into agreements with other countries that impose U.S. import restrictions on archaeological or ethnological material when pillage of the materials places the nation's cultural heritage in jeopardy. These agreements also promote long-term safeguards for protecting cultural heritage and increase international access to cultural property for educational, scientific, and cultural purposes.
The U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation provides direct grant support for the preservation of cultural sites, cultural objects and collections, and forms of traditional cultural expression in developing countries around the world. Each year, the Cultural Heritage Center invites U.S. Ambassadors in eligible countries to submit proposals for cultural preservation projects on behalf of ministries of culture, museums, academic institutions, and other appropriate entities concerned with cultural preservation. The Ambassadors Fund has supported more than 500 cultural preservation projects in more than 100 countries since 2001.
The Iraq Cultural Heritage Initiative includes other collaborations with the Iraq State Board of Antiquities and Heritage and U.S. partner institutions to address Iraq National Museum needs and site protection and preservation.
