2002 Progress Report: Health Effects Research Core

EPA Grant Number: R827355C007
Subproject: this is subproject number 007 , established and managed by the Center Director under grant R827355
(EPA does not fund or establish subprojects; EPA awards and manages the overall grant for this center).

Center: Airborne PM - Northwest Research Center for Particulate Air Pollution and Health
Center Director: Koenig, Jane Q.
Title: Health Effects Research Core
Investigators: Kaufman, Joel D. , Gill, Edward , Koenig, Jane Q. , Sullivan, Jeff , Trenga, Carol
Institution: University of Washington
EPA Project Officer: Stacey Katz/Gail Robarge,
Project Period: June 1, 1999 through May 31, 2004
Project Period Covered by this Report: June 1, 2001 through May 31, 2002
RFA: Airborne Particulate Matter (PM) Centers (1999)
Research Category: Particulate Matter

Description:

Objective:

To provide epidemiological and medical consultation for all Center activities and investigators. A further goal is to acquire and maintain appropriate health testing equipment for evaluating respiratory and cardiovascular health outcomes.

Progress Summary:

The Health Core continues to support other research projects in the Center. During Year 4, we took a principal role in the design and execution of a study of the effects of agricultural burning in young asthmatics in Eastern Washington. The Health Core also supported development of testable hypotheses and protocols for studies in the new controlled exposure facility.

Future Activities:

During Year 4 of the project, the Health Core took the lead on analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) and systemic markers of inflammation and thrombosis in serum. The core has acquired new equipment for assessment of exhaled nitric oxide in human subjects for ongoing studies. During the upcoming year we will finalize and submit manuscripts from the panel study related to Heart Rate Variability, systemic markers of inflammation and thrombosis in serum, and pediatric lung function. We will complete analysis of the results of the agricultural burning health effects study. We will continue to support development of protocols in the new controlled exposure facility.
