Welcome to PVO Registration

USAID's Registry of private voluntary organizations (PVOs) includes a diverse group of organizations engaged in foreign assistance and development work worldwide-from institutions with global reach that annually deliver hundreds of millions of dollars in aid to start-up entities with limited resources.

A PVO is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization that meets certain USAID-defined criteria that are codified in the Conditions of Registration. PVOs register with USAID to become eligible to compete for specific types of funding, e.g., development assistance grants and cooperative agreements.

The registration process allows USAID to—

  • Identify PVOs that engage in, or intend to engage in, voluntary foreign aid operations
  • Determine whether PVOs meet certain general operating guidelines and accountability standards
  • Certify that PVOs are eligible to apply for USAID assistance

An organization applies for registration by completing an application on USAID's PVO Registration Web site. On your initial visit to the registration site, you will need a DUNS Number (available from Dun & Bradstreet, Inc.) in addition to general organizational information. Please be aware that new applicants will need to provide financial statements that are audited by a certified public accountant to complete the application.

Once the registration application is submitted, USAID reviews initial applications and responds within eight weeks; however, the review and decision can be delayed if an application is incomplete or contains erroneous information.

Applicants should understand that registration is renewed each year. A registered PVO tenders an annual submission within nine months of its fiscal year end. The annual submission allows USAID to evaluate the PVO's ongoing compliance with the Conditions of Registration.

Potential applicants should proceed to the PVO New Applicant Registration page for additional information.
