Congress Honors Waipi'o Little League World Champions

Washington, D.C. -- The U.S. House of Representatives today honored the Waipi'o Little League team, 2008 Little League World Series Champions, in a unanimous resolution introduced by Representative Neil Abercrombie. Waipi'o clinched the title with a 12-3 win over the Matamoros team from Tamaulipas, Mexico in the championship game on August 24th.

The Waipi'o team became the fourth U.S. team in a row, and the second team in three years from Hawaii, to win the World Series, played each year in Williamsport, PA.  Ewa Beach won the title in 2005.

The resolution, approved by a unanimous vote of the House today, said “the achievement of the Waipi'o Little League baseball team is the cause of enormous pride for the Nation, the State of Hawai'i and the community of Waipi'o”  Congress commended the team's families, coaches, and community for their support and dedication to enabling the success of the team on and off the field.

“As the House and Senate continue to struggle this weekend to find the best and fairest way to stabilize the country’s economy and housing markets, it is a welcome respite to focus on this impressive achievement,” said Abercrombie.  “Waipi'o’s sportsmanship, hard work, and the dedication of its players, coaches, families and community, are an inspiration, and I am very proud to represent them in Congress.”

The resolution was co-sponsored by Reps. Mazie K. Hirono, Eni Faleomavaega of American Samoa, Madeleine Bordallo of Guam and John Peterson, who represents Williamsport, PA, home of the Little League World Series.
