Abercrombie: "Security Grant will make Port of Honolulu Safer"

Washington, DC -- “I’m very pleased that Honolulu Harbor will receive more than $1 million through the Port Security Grant Program,” said U.S. Representative Neil Abercrombie.  “Increasing the security of all our seaports is important to the economic health of the nation, but for us in Hawaii, a secure and thriving Port of Honolulu is our lifeblood.”

The State Department of Transportation’s Harbor Division will receive $1, 070.290

through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Port Security Grant Program.  The funds are intended to help commercial seaports heighten their defenses against improvised explosive devices that might be smuggled in, as well as other non-conventional; methods of terrorist attack.

Rep. Abercrombie noted that the Port of Honolulu was selected for the grant based on its geographic risk and its essential role in America’s overall seaborne commerce structure.

“These kinds of federal grants help make our nation’s seaports safer,” Abercrombie said. “However, they are still too vulnerable.  We need to do much more to secure them, including expanding this grant program and requiring better cargo and container inspection and screening measures.”
