Abercrombie announces Navy tech contract
for Hawaii firm

Washington, DC -- Congressman Neil Abercrombie today announced that a Hawaii company has been awarded a $5,998,252 contract for engineering and testing of a new system being developed to detect submarines.

BAE Systems Spectral Solutions, LLC, of Honolulu, was awarded the contract for engineering and field testing of the first demonstration unit of the Electro-Optic Passive Anti-Submarine Warfare System (EPAS).

The work is expected to be completed in May 2007.

The EPAS analyzes visual data collected from the ocean surface by aircraft in order to detect anomalies which indicate the presence of submerged submarines, but which are undetectable by the human eye.

Because the system is passive, it has no impact on marine life.

Abercrombie, a long-time champion of the project, has secured funding in previous years for EPAS and ensured that the 2007 National Defense Authorization bill includes an additional $4.0 million for the program.

“This work will enhance the effectiveness of our military against the threat posed by hostile submarines,” said Abercrombie.

“The project strengthens the high tech sector of Hawaii’s economy and ensures the continuing growth of opportunities for today’s young people seeking jobs in the research and development field.

“I’m especially pleased that a Hawaii firm won this award.  It shows that island companies can compete successfully for military business against mainland firms.”

Abercrombie is a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, which authorizes research and development projects and other programs for the U.S. Armed Forces.
