Abercrombie mourns death of Henry Giugni

Washington, DC -- Congressman Neil Abercrombie issued the following statement today regarding the death of Henry Kuualoha Giugni, former chief of staff for Senator Daniel Inouye and U.S. Senate Sergeant at Arms:

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Henry Giugni.  I want to extend my deepest sympathy to his entire family.

“Henry Giugni was a commanding presence in national politics, but he never forgot his island roots.  He carried himself with a personal humility that is rare in Washington.  At the same time, he was universally respected for his wisdom, insight and institutional knowledge.  Those qualities made his advice widely sought after. I felt privileged to count him as a friend and an advisor.

“As Senate Sergeant at Arms, Henry Giugni was a trailblazer.  He was the first person of color to hold the post.  More importantly, he used his power to open the way for others.  During his tenure, he ensured that everyone who aspired to play a part in the nation’s political life would be judged fairly on his or her merits.  The result of his efforts was a Senate staff that more closely resembled the diversity of our nation.  He was a public servant in the highest and best sense of the term.

Hawaii and the nation are much the poorer for the loss of Henry Kuualoha Giugni.  I will miss him deeply.  Our greatest consolation is our memory of a man who made our world a better place through his work on behalf of others and for the public good”
