FORT Co-hosts Conservation Reserve Program Conference

The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is the USDA's largest environmental program, with over 34 million acres enrolled across all 50 states. Since 1993, FORT scientists Art Allen and Mark Vandever have worked closely with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm Service Agency (FSA) to assess the ecological effects of the program as well as landowners' perceptions of the program's benefits. On June 7-9, the FSA and USGS are co-hosting a national conference, CRP Planting for the Future, in Fort Collins, Colorado. Over 40 speakers from academia, government agencies, and a diverse assortment of commodity and conservation groups will address conservation, wildlife, water quality, and economic effects of the program. Knowledge and information brought forth in this conference will assist the USDA in setting conservation priorities for the next Farm Bill in 2007.
