  • Federal Funds for Research and Development: Fiscal Years 2006–08 (NSF 10-303)
    The annual report, Federal Funds for Research and Development: FY 2006–08, consists of 131 tables derived from the Survey of Federal Funds for Research and Development, for FY 2006–08, and from earlier surveys in this series. These data provide data users with the most timely data possible and are not readily available from any other sources. These statistical data tables will only be available via the World Wide Web.   • Federal R&D Support Shows Little Change in FY 2008 (NSF 09-320)
    Federal obligations for R&D and R&D plant totaled $116.5 billion in FY 2008, a 0.5% increase in current dollars and 1.9% decrease in constant dollars over FY 2007. Over the period FY 2004–2008 federal R&D and P&D plant obligations dropped $1.5 billion in constant dollars—an average annual decrease of 0.4%. Research obligations declined over FY 2004–08 at an average annual rate of 2.1%. Among agencies, research obligations have shown an average annual rise only at the Department of Defense.   • Federal Government is Largest Source of University R&D Funding in S&E; Share Drops in FY 2008 (NSF 09-318)
    Federal funding of academic science and engineering R&D rose 2.5% in current dollars in FY 2008 but for the third straight year was nearly flat in constant dollars. Although still the largest source, the federal share of academic R&D funding fell to 60% in FY 2008.The Department of Health and Human Services funded 56% of the federal total. Public institutions spent $35.3 billion on R&D, private institutions $16.6 billion. The Johns Hopkins University remained the largest R&D-performing institution overall. (October 1, 2009)

  • Characteristics of Doctoral Scientists and Engineers in the United States: 2006 (NSF 09-317)
    This report presents data on the demographic and employment characteristics of the nation's doctoral scientists and engineers. These tables provide information on the number and median salaries of doctoral scientists and engineers by field of doctorate and occupation; demographic characteristics such as gender, race/ethnicity, citizenship; and employment-related characteristics such as sector of employment, employer location, and various labor force rates.   • Federal Science and Engineering Support to Universities, Colleges, and Nonprofit Institutions: FY 2007 (NSF 09-315)
    Erratum: All-agencies totals for U. Central FL and U. South FL in table 14 have been revised. Table 14 was replaced with a corrected version October 2009.

    Data presented in this report are from the Survey of Federal Science and Engineering Support to Universities, Colleges, and Nonprofit Institutions: Fiscal Year 2007, and contains comprehensive detailed statistical tables. Data included in this report are Federal academic and nonprofit obligations by type of activity (six types of activity for academic, two for nonprofits), by year, by geographic division and state, by agency, and by individual institution rankings.   • Federal S&E Obligations to Three Types of Minority-Serving Institutions Decline in FY 2007 (NSF 09-319)
    Federal agencies obligated $28.5 billion to 1,216 academic institutions for S&E activities in FY 2007, down 0.4% from FY 2006 and the first current-dollar decrease in 11 years. The Department of Health and Human Services contributed 61% of the total. Decreases were larger for tribal institutions (13.2%), historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) (8.6%), and high-Hispanic enrollment institutions (HHEs) (1.6%). R&D comprised 89% of total obligations, but 79%, 58%, and 33% of obligations to HHEs, HBCUs, and tribal institutions, respectively.

  • Master Government List of Federally Funded Research and Development Centers
    The Master Government List of Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs) has been updated to reflect changes through April 2009. This list, maintained by the National Science Foundation, includes sponsoring agencies, administrator types, R&D activity types, and locations. (August 13, 2009)

  • U.S. Business R&D Expenditures Increase in 2007; Small Companies Performed 19% of Nation's Business R&D (NSF 09-316)
    Data from the Survey of Industrial Research and Development show business R&D expenditures increased from $248 billion in 2006 to $269 billion in 2007. Manufacturers performed 70% of business R&D in 2007. Ten states accounted for 69% of the total (California 24%). Small companies performed 19% of the total. Domestic net sales, R&D-to-sales ratio, and domestic employment in R&D-performing companies increased. The number of full-time equivalent scientists and engineers performing business R&D remained 1.1 million. (July 10, 2009)

  • Academic Institutional Profiles: 2006
    The FY2006 version of the annual Academic Institutional Profiles is available. Academic Institutional Profiles consist of institution-specific data from the Survey of R&D Expenditures at Universities and Colleges, Survey of Federal S&E Support to Universities, Colleges and Nonprofit Institutions, Survey of Graduate Students and Postdoctorates, and Survey of Earned Doctorates. Key data items are summarized and institutions rankings are presented. (July 6, 2009)

  • S&E Graduate Enrollments Accelerate in 2007; Enrollments of Foreign Students Reach New High (NSF 09-314)
    The 2007 Survey of Graduate Students and Postdoctorates in Science and Engineering (S&E) showed an annual growth rate of 3.3% for enrollments in S&E graduate programs, the highest since 2002. Sciences added more students in absolute numbers, but the annual growth rate in engineering fields (5.9%) was substantially higher than in science fields (2.4%). The proportion of foreign student enrollments remained below its 2002 high, despite an annual growth rate of 4.6%, the highest since 2002. (June 24, 2009)
