Privacy Act
The Privacy
Act of 1974 provides safeguards against unwarranted invasions
of privacy through the misuse of records by Federal agencies
by restricting disclosure of personally identifiable records
maintained by agencies; granting individuals increased rights
of access to records maintained about them; granting individuals
the right to seek amendment of records maintained about them
upon a showing that the records are not accurate, relevant,
timely or complete; and establishing a code of "fair information
practices" which requires agencies to comply with statutory
norms for collection, maintenance, use and dissemination of
records.
The Treasury regulations which implement the Act are found
at 31 CFR Part 1, Subpart C. Section 1.36 lists the systems
of records for which an exemption has been claimed under 5
U.S.C. 552a(j)(2) and/or (k). Procedures specific to a particular
bureau are contained in the appropriate appendix to the regulations.
The Department processes requests for records under both the
Privacy Act and the Freedom of Information Act in order to
provide the greatest amount of access.
Treasury's Privacy Act systems of records notices published
in 2001 are available electronically at: "Privacy
Act Issuances". A listing of recent Privacy Act documents
appearing in the Federal Register can be found
