James S. (Jim) Bogard is a staff member at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), where he is engaged in radiation dosimetry research at the Dosimetry Applications Research (DOSAR) Calibration Laboratory. Jim began his health physics career in 1981 as a supervisor in the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant Health Physics Department. He was Head of the ORNL Radiation Monitoring Department from 1985 until 1993, when he became the DOSAR Program Leader in what is now the ORNL Life Sciences Division. His research is concerned primarily with development of energy- independent neutron and heavy-charged-particle dosimeters, useful for homeland security applications, as well as for medical and space radiation dosimetry. Jim is also an Adjunct Professor in the University of Tennessee - Knoxville, Department of Anthropology, using the thermoluminescence properties of natural materials to date archaeological artifacts. He is co-author of Problems and Solutions in Radiation Protection (McGraw Hill).

Current research interests

Jim received his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from The University of Texas at Austin in 1977. He has been Certified by the American Board of Health Physics and Registered with the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists since 1986. Jim lives in Oak Ridge with his wife, Rhonda, who is also a health physicist. They have three sons.
