Education Programs and Partnerships

 

Regional Middle and High School Science Bowls
The Middle School Science Bowl (for grades six through eight) and the High School Science Bowl (for grades nine through twelve) are academic competitions sponsored by the Department of Energy. The Science Bowl tests students’ knowledge in all areas of science. Students are quizzed in a fast-paced question and answer forum at a regional event. For both events, a regional competition is held in Albuquerque, with the winning team going on to the national competition. Los Alamos National Laboratory, the Public Service Company of New Mexico, Albuquerque Public Schools, and Sandia National Laboratories are sponsors of the regional event. The Department of Energy is a sponsor of both the regional and national events. The Regional Middle School Science Bowl took place on January 17, 2009. (Albuquerque Academy won first place). The High School Science Bowl will take place on Febrary 28, 2009, and the National Event on April 30 - May 5--the middle and high school competitions will be combined).

Regional Hydrogen Fuel Cell Car Competition
LANL is a co-sponsor of the annual Hydrogen Fuel Cell Challenge, usually held in Albuquerque. Other sponsors are the Public Service Company of New Mexico, Albuquerque Public Schools, Sandia National Laboratories, and the Department of Energy. The competition provides a hands-on opportunity for middle school students (grades six through eight) to understand the need for renewable energy sources and explore the emerging technology of hydrogen power. The competition consists of four areas that include the car design, an essay competition (optional) and the race itself. (This event took place on April 18, 2009. Madison Middle School, Hoover Middle School, and John F. Kennedy Middle Schools in Albuquerque took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place ) The Teacher's Workshop took place on February 28. School to World
School to World is a business, government, and education partnership event in New Mexico where eighth-and ninth-grade students meet one-on-one with professionals to learn what they need to study in high school to achieve their career dreams.  Career clusters include: Science, Engineering & Technology, Trades, Arts & Communications, Business (including Hospitality & Tourism), and Community & Education. Los Alamos National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories were major sponsors for the 2008 School to World event.  (this event took place on March 14, 2009 - approximately 2,626 students, parents and presenters participated)

New Mexico Hispanic Youth Symposium. The Albuquerque event is aimed at helping sophomore-and junior-level high school students address issues such as academic achievement, career choices, community service, and personal responsibility. Students are also given the opportunity to express themselves culturally through participation in essay, speech, art, and talent competitions. Up to 200 Hispanic students will get a glimpse of college campus life, have access to professionals to advise them how to enter and stay in college, and receive year-round support to achieve their academic goals.

Local sponsors for the Symposium include Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, Lockheed Martin, The University of New Mexico, and New Mexico Math Engineering Science Achievement (MESA). National sponsors include the Department of Justice and the Department of Energy. (the event will take place on July 15-18, 2009). Click here to view agenda.

Science on Wheels
In this time of dwindling field-trip budgets, the Bradbury Science Museum’s Science on Wheels program provides free, on-site, hands-on science activities to schools in northern New Mexico. Each student is an active participant in programs that use science equipment provided by the Museum under the direction of a science educator. Activities have included “Circuit Connection,” “Galaxy to Go,” and “Bones.” The activities support state standards and benchmarks for science education.

Museum Explorations
Museum Explorations provides customized two-hour visits for school classes and other groups that visit the Bradbury Science Museum. Topics covered have included “Cryogenics,” “Volts and Jolts,” “The Manhattan Project,” and “Incredible Insects.” The activities support state standards and benchmarks for science education.

Museum Visit Enrichment
Museum Visit Enrichment encompasses educational programming for the Museum's daily visitors. It includes Demo Stage, providing demonstrations on science topics such as “Soils," "Density," and "Fossils,” and Tech Lab, which encourages in-depth exploration of science topics through hands-on, try-it-yourself experiments.

Special Science Programming
Special Science Programming from the Museum encompasses seasonal science education offerings for lifelong learners of all ages with events such as “High Tech Halloween,” “Pi Day,” and the “Astronomy Days” lecture series. “Summer Adventures in Science” is a two-week children’s program that includes activities such as “Forensics,” “Water Rockets,” and the “Inventor’s Workshop.”
