National Institute of Mental Health

These initiatives are three of several being offered by NIH to help fulfill the goals of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act) to help stimulate the economy through support of biomedical and behavioral research. Additional information on the Recovery Act and related NIH opportunities is available through the Office of Extramural Research.

With these initiatives, NIH announces the opportunity for investigators and U.S. institutions with active NIH Research Grants to request up to 2 years of supplemental funding for the purpose of promoting job creation, economic development, and accelerating the pace and achievement of scientific research. NIMH will be supporting supplemental funding for the following initiatives:

Revision applications (Formerly known as Competitive Supplements): Revision applications may be submitted to support a significant expansion of scope or research protocol of currently funded projects.  NIMH has identified specific areas of interest in accordance with the Institute’s Strategic Plan. Only applications that focus on these topics will be considered for funding. For NIMH’s topic areas and additional information on this supplement program, go to Recovery Act: Revision Applications - NIMH Areas.

Administrative Supplements: Applications may be submitted to support an increase in tempo of currently funded projects within the general scope of the project. The parent grant must be active and the research/scientific activities proposed in the supplement must be accomplished within the current competitive segment or 2-years, whichever is less.  NIMH has identified specific areas of interest in accordance with the Institute's Strategic Plan, the Trans-NIH Plan for HIV-Related Research, and the National Advisory Mental Health Council Workgroup report on research training. Only applications that focus on these topics will be considered for funding. For NIMH’s topic areas and additional information on this supplement program, go to Recovery Act: Administrative Supplements - NIMH Areas.

Administrative Supplements for Diversity: Administrative supplements under this initiative may be requested by Principal Investigators (PIs) of active NIMH grants who plan to serve as mentors for candidates of diversity. For additional information on administrative supplements for diversity, go to Recovery Act: Administrative Supplements for Diversity.

Administrative Supplements to Provide Summer Research Experiences for Students and Science Educators: Applications may be submitted to provide summer research opportunities to High School and College Students, or Science Educators (e.g., Elementary, Middle, and High School Teachers and Community College Faculty).  For additional information on how to apply, go to Recovery Act: Administrative Supplements for Summer Research Experiences.

Funding

The Institute plans to allocate approximately $5 million per year for administrative supplements and $5 million per year for revision applications to provide additional funding to a small number of grants with the greatest potential to accelerate research in areas described in the NIMH Strategic Plan and, when relevant, the Trans-NIH Plan for HIV-Related Research, and the National Advisory Mental Health Council Workgroup report on research training. Applications should address one or more of the Strategic Plan-related topics listed on the individual supplement pages.

Information on no cost extensions and how they relate to applications for Recovery Act supplements can be found under the Funding heading on the individual supplement pages listed above.

Awarded supplements will be subject to extensive reporting requirements, as stipulated by the Recovery Act (see NOT-OD-09-054).

Application Receipt Dates for All Supplements is April 21, 2009.

Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to read NIH’s Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) regarding Recovery Act supplements.
