Announcement Information Announcement Number HRSA-09-204 Announcement Code COES CFDA Number 93.157 Provisional Yes Activity Code D34 Competitive Yes Fiscal Year 2009 Purpose The goal of the Centers of Excellence (COE) is to assist eligible schools in supporting programs of excellence in health professions education for underrepresented minority individuals. The grantee is required to use the funds awarded: (1) to establish, strengthen, or expand programs to enhance the academic performance of the underrepresented minority students attending the school; (2) to improve the capacity of such schools to train, recruit, and retain underrepresented minority faculty including the payment of stipends and fellowships; (3) to carry out activities to improve the information resources, clinical education, curricula, and cultural competence of the graduates of the schools as it relates to minority health issues; (4) to facilitate faculty and student research on health issues, particularly affecting underrepresented minority groups; including research on issues relating to the delivery of health care; (5) to carry out a program to train students of the school in providing health services to a significant number of underrepresented minority individuals through training provided to such students at community based health facilities that provide such health services and are located at a site remote from the main site of the teaching facilities of the school; (6) to provide stipends as appropriate; and (7) to develop a large competitive applicant pool through linkages with institutions of higher education, local school districts, and other community based entities and establish an educational pipeline for health professions careers.   Legislative Information Public Health Service Act, Title VII, Section 736 Application Information Application Available Apr 28, 2009 Application Deadline May 29, 2009 8:00 PM ET Explanation for Deadline Not Available Archive Date Jul 27, 2009 Letter of Intent Deadline Not Available. See minimum student enrollment requirements under "Designations of Centers of Excellence."   Schools of allopathic medicine, osteopathic medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, graduate programs in behavioral or mental health, or other public and non profit health or educational entities, including faith based organizations, and community based organizations, that meet the requirements of section 736(c) of the Public Health Service Act. Modification 2 published on Apr 28, 2009 (View Announcement) As a result of additional funding authorized by Congress in the FY 2009 budget HRSA has established a second competitive funding opportunity for the Centers of Excellence Grant Program. Applications that have been submitted for the first announcement and were received by HRSA by the closing date of February 18, 2009 will be combined with applications received from the second announcement. All applications from both announcements will be reviewed in ONE peer review meeting. The guidance and requirements for both announcements for FY 2009 remain the same, with the exception that the requirement to form a consortium with other health professions schools applies only to Native American Centers of Excellence.
