“Step 1” SNAP Pre-Screening Tool  (Stand Alone Version)

What is the Step 1 Stand Alone?

The Step 1 pre-screening tool enables users to find out if they may be eligible for SNAP benefits and how much they might receive. The stand alone version of “Step 1” can be used in locations where there is no Internet connection available. As with the web-based version, the Step 1 stand alone is available in English and Spanish.

The stand alone version greatly extends the reach of pre-screening activities. Pre-screening using Step 1 is no longer limited to those locations that have an Internet connection. Using the Step 1 stand alone and a personal computer, pre-screening for SNAP benefits can occur in faith-based locations, homeless shelters, migrant camps, private homes, parks, job sites, and practically anywhere else.

Pre-screening provides useful information to help potentially eligible people make a decision about taking the next step to apply for SNAP benefits. After pre-screening, those who wish to apply for SNAP benefits may do so by completing an application and submitting it to their local SNAP office.

How do I get the Step 1 Stand Alone?

To get a copy of the Step 1 stand alone prescreening tool, simply download the file to your computer.

If you are unable to download the file, a CD-ROM version is available free from FNS upon request. To request a CD-ROM version of Step 1, please send an email to SNAPoutreach@fns.usda.gov.

How do I get updates to the Step1 Stand Alone?

The Step 1 stand alone prescreening tool is updated annually on or about October 1 to accommodate annual Cost of Living Adjustments made to the SNAP allotments, income limits, and deductions. The tool may be also updated other times during the year as needed. Please remember to check this website frequently to make sure you have the most updated version of the Step 1 stand alone. It is the user’s responsibility to ensure that they are using the most current version of the tool. Updates will be posted on this page. Users will need to download the new version each time the tool is updated.

The Step 1 stand alone tool was last updated on Dec. 12, 2008.
