The July 2009 MSO/VSO Roundtable took place on Wednesday, July 22, at the DoD Force Health Protection & Readiness (FHP&R) offices in Falls Church, VA. The roundtable was hosted by Dr. Kelley Brix, from Force Health Protection and Readiness.

Agenda

Featured speakers were:

  • Warner Anderson, MD, FACP, Director, International Health Division, Office of the ASD/HA, Force Health Protection & Readiness
    • An overview of the global medical outreach mission of a relatively new FHP&R capability area-International Health-was presented before a group of military and veterans service organizations (MSO/VSO) during a roundtable discussion July 22 in the agency's Falls Church, Va., offices. In a presentation entitled, "Providing International Security and Stability through Health," International Health Division (IHD) Director Dr. Warner Anderson explained that the division was formed about 18 months ago following a department directive (DoDD 3000.05) issued in late 2005 that elevated stability operations to the same level as warfighting in DoD planning. The division was also derived from a presidential directive (NSPD-44) issued at about the same time that requires DoD and other U.S. government agencies to be prepared to work closely together on international stability operations, including humanitarian relief and health care reconstruction efforts.   • LTC (P) Wayne E. Hachey, DO, MPH, Director, Preventive Medicine and Surveillance Office, ASD/Health Affairs, Force Health Protection & Readiness
    • The most recent meeting of Military Service Organizations and Veteran Service Organizations conducted at the central office of Force Health Protection and Readiness (FHP&R) on July 22 featured an interesting and informative presentation by LTC (P) Wayne E. Hachey, DO, MPH, Director of Preventive Medicine for FHP&R, and a subject matter expert on Pandemic Influenza. Hachey discussed the nature of Influenza, its properties and impacts, and two of the most well-known strains currently impacting nations across the globe - H5N1 Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) and Novel H1N1.
