Explore the historic 1860 Lincoln neighborhood.

Walk in the footsteps of Abraham Lincoln as you explore the historic neighborhood surrounding his home of seventeen years. Restored to its 1860 appearance, the four-block area contains eleven historic structures dating back to Lincoln's time.

Take a stroll through the neighborhood and learn about Mr. Lincoln's neighbors and about daily life in 1860 Springfield. Two houses, the Dean House and the Arnold House are open to the public and contain exhibits on the Lincoln Home and the restoration and preservation of the neighborhood.

Visit the Harriet Dean House, one of two houses in the Lincoln neighborhood open to the public as a self-guided tour. The Dean House was built ca. 1850s for the widow Harriet Dean. Inside, exhibits explore the evolution of the Lincoln Home across the street from a one-story cottage to the present two-story structure enlarged in the mid-1850s.

Did You Know?
Lincoln insisted on having the 1864 election in the midst of war. "You can not have free government without elections...if the rebellion could force us to forgo a national election, it might fairly claim to have already conquered and ruined us." Lincoln Home National Historic Site, Illinois
