1. What programs does FMS offer?

The FMS Human Resources Services Branch is responsible for the recruitment of Students in the Student Educational Employment Program. This includes:

2. What are typical entry level positions?

3. What are the eligibility requirements?

In addition to U.S. citizenship, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a degree-seeking student (diploma, certificate, etc.)

  • Meet the minimum age required by federal, state or local laws governing the employment of minors.

  • Enrolled at least half-time in an academic or vocational or technical course in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school

  • Met the basic qualification standard for the position to which the student is appointed.

  • Met the requirements of the educational program (some schools have a required minimum GPA, class status requirements, etc).

4. What are the benefits?

You can earn vacation (annual) and sick leave. The number of hours for leave you can earn is based on the number of hours you work per week.

You are eligible for both health and life insurance coverage as long as you are expected to be employed under an appointment authority for at least one year and are expected to be in a pay status for at least one third of the total period of time from the date of your initial appointment to the date of the completion of the program.

Cost of life insurance premiums is split between the employee and the agency.

5. Do FMS programs offer promotion potential?

You may be eligible for promotion depending on the type of appointment, the promotional potential of the position, and satisfactory performance

6. What type of work schedules are available?

Flexible Full time or Part-time - You may work full-time (40 hours per week) during the summer months or while on break from school. During the academic year, various schedules exist depending on the program you are in.

Parallel or Alternating - You will either work concurrently while attending classes or on an alternating basis between school and work.

7. Will the federal government pay student tuition?

In general, federal law prohibits agencies from paying for an employee's expenses. However, under certain circumstances, an agency may pay all or part of training costs directly related to a student's duties.

8. Does the federal government help pay back student loans?

As a recruitment tool, FMS can offer student loan repayments once they have made an offer of employment. As a retention tool, loan repayments can be made to current employees as one of many incentives designed to keep talented employees in the federal work force. Using the authority, FMS can tailor loan repayment programs to meet specific resources needed.

9. When should I apply for a job?

You can apply any time. If you are a college senior, we suggest that you apply at the start of the fall semester. If you are a high school student, simply tell one of the FMS recruiters your plans and ambitions and contact your school's counselor.

10. Can I contact a Recruiter even it I'm not ready to apply?

Yes! In fact, we encourage both high school and college students to contact an FMS Recruiter directly.
