Profile:

The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico has 78 Municipalities. In the year 2001, the Government identified approximately 400 “Special Communities” with low income families. Most of the habitants of these communities receive welfare and other Local, State or Federal support programs. Currently the Puerto Rico Department of Health is recruiting volunteers for the MRC Unit of Puerto Rico. PRDOH is promoting the mission, responsibilities and benefits for the community these volunteers will provide through this unit at private hospitals, public treatment centers and nurse and medical schools. At the moment the PRDOH is developing an educational brochure to be distributed among interested volunteers. After recruited, PRDOH will train these volunteers on the health related topics of interest: Aviar Flu, Pandemics, Vaccination and Nutrition, among others. For this Program the Island has been divided into the 11 DOH Emergency Management Division Regions. Puerto Rico has started to target the eight health regions, specifically the eleven emergency zones as outlined in our State Emergency Agency (PREMA). We have been given presentations, distributing brochures and inviting the citizenship to join as volunteers to a variety of audiences. The purpose is to present the MRC to different authorities across the island to have their support in recruiting volunteers.
