AWARDS $1.5 MILLION TO THE CITY OF WESTWEGO The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration awarded a $1,583,164 grant to the City of Westwego, La. to acquire land for a recreational facility and conserved open space. NOAA is an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce. The City of Westwego will use the grant funds to acquire 132 acres of land in the Bayou Westwego area. The acquired land will be preserved as an open space area open to the public and the Wetlands Harbor Activities Recreational Facility will be constructed on the site. The WHARF will be a public-use multi-purpose facility. “The funding from this NOAA grant will help create a facility and park area that are valuable outreach tools to increase the public’s awareness and appreciation the environmental richness and diversity that Westwego Bayou offers,” said retired Navy Vice Adm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Ph.D., under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator. “NOAA and the Bush Administration are working to improve the understanding of our environment and to strengthen local initiatives like wetland conservation and public use.” Each year, NOAA awards approximately $900 million in grants to members of the academic, scientific and business communities to assist the agency in fulfilling its mission to study the Earth's natural systems in order to predict environmental change, manage ocean resources, protect life and property and provide decision makers with reliable scientific information. NOAA goals and programs reflect a commitment to these basic responsibilities of science and service to the nation for the past 34 years.
