NOAA Awards $2.5 Million To The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation

NOAA AWARDS $2.5 MILLION TO THE
NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARY FOUNDATION

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced a grant totaling $2,554,780 to the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation to enhance outreach and education projects to raise public awareness about sanctuaries. NOAA is an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

The grant will fund the development and implementation of marine education and outreach projects mandated under the National Sanctuary Act.

“Education and public awareness play key roles in the success of NOAA programs and initiatives,” said retired Navy Vice Adm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Ph.D., under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator. “The work funded by this grant to the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation to increase outreach actively supports efforts that reinforce NOAA and the Bush Administration’s commitment to environmental literacy.”

Each year, NOAA awards approximately $900 million in grants to members of the academic, scientific and business communities to assist the agency in fulfilling its mission to study the Earth’s natural systems in order to predict environmental change, manage ocean resources, protect life and property, and provide decision makers with reliable scientific information. NOAA goals and programs reflect a commitment to these basic responsibilities of science and service to the nation for the past 34 years.
