Food Lion, Hill Phoenix, Sweetbay, Whole Foods, and Supervalu Chill for the Environment
(Atlanta, Ga. – Aug. 26, 2009) EPA’s GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership announced its 2009 partner awards this week, and among the awardees are: Food Lion, Hill Phoenix, Sweetbay, Whole Foods, and Supervalu, the parent company of Bigg’s and Farm Fresh. An EPA cooperative alliance with the supermarket industry, the GreenChill Partnership works with supermarkets to reduce their emissions of ozone-depleting and greenhouse gas refrigerants. Full Story

Cobb County Fleet Management Joins EPA’s National Partnership for Environmental Priorities

Company commits to using lead-free wheel weights and recycling 2,500 pounds of lead

(Marietta, Ga. – August 19, 2009) The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today recognized Cobb County Fleet Management (CCFM) in Marietta, Ga. as the newest environmental steward to join the National Partnership for Environmental Priorities (NPEP). The commitment includes the use of environmentally safe, lead-free wheel weights, as well as the implementation of recycling lead wheel weights used on the existing fleet of automobiles and trucks used in daily CCFM operations. CCFM anticipates that 2,500 pounds of lead will be safely recycled, eliminating a potential toxic pollutant from posing a risk to human health and the environment. Full Story

Florida Community College at Jacksonville, FL Will Provide Green Job Training through EPA Brownfields Grants
(Atlanta, Ga. – Aug. 6, 2009) EPA has selected Florida Community College at Jacksonville, Fla. to receive $500,000 in grant funding to help train community members for jobs assessing and cleaning up brownfields sites. Funding for these grants is supported by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Full Story

MRC Holdings, Inc. agrees to Cleanup Groundwater at the MRI Superfund Site in Tampa, Florida
(Atlanta, Ga. – August 3, 2009) The Department of Justice, on behalf of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), filed a complaint and lodged a Consent Decree on July 30, 2009 resolving claims for implementation of work plus recovery of EPA response costs at the MRI Superfund Site (the Site) located in Tampa, Fla. Southwire to Pay Unprecedented Fine for Clean Air Act Violations
(Atlanta, Ga. – July 23, 2009) In the largest civil settlement obtained for alleged violations of the Secondary Aluminum Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) regulations at a single facility in the Southeastern United States, Southwire Company has agreed to pay a total of $337,500 in civil penalties to the United States and the Commonwealth of Kentucky to address alleged noncompliance in testing, operational, monitoring, and record-keeping requirements of the Clean Air Act (CAA) at its Hawesville, Ky. secondary aluminum production facility. EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson Announces $1 Million Grant to Clean up Contaminated Land, Support BeltLine in Atlanta

Redevelopment of sites creates local jobs and greenspace

(ATLANTA – June 2, 2009) At a ceremony today in Atlanta, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lisa P. Jackson announced a $1 million grant to the City of Atlanta to clean up sites known as brownfields along the Atlanta BeltLine and other redevelopment corridors. The funds will be used to cleanup 10-15 local sites, contaminated by hazardous chemicals or pollutants, which will be restored to help fuel the local economy. This move will help spur redevelopment, secure jobs and create greenspace. Full Story | Photos

Lewisville, N.C., Student Receives Presidential Environmental Youth Award

(ATLANTA – May 14, 2009) EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson recognized Cory Adkins, a student at Forsyth Country Day School in Lewisville, N.C., at the Presidential Environmental Youth Award (PEYA) ceremony in Washington, D.C. Adkins is one of 10 national winners who were recognized. He received the award for his outstanding work in creating the Green Books Project, an environmental education program for his local community. Full Story

 

EPA to Oversee Cleanup of TVA Kingston Fossil Fuel Plant Release

(Atlanta, GA – May 11, 2009) Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency signed an enforceable agreement with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to oversee the removal of coal ash at the TVA Kingston Fossil Fuel Plant in Roane County, TN, where more than five million cubic yards of coal ash spilled. Under the Administrative Order and Agreement on Consent (order) which was entered into under the Superfund law, EPA will oversee the cleanup and TVA will reimburse EPA for its oversight costs.
