Waste Transportation

The transportation of radioactive materials and wastes is highly visible and frequently controversial among many segments of the public.  As DOE expands its site cleanup and closure activities, the availability of safe, efficient, and cost-effective transportation becomes critical.

Transportation, however, is a DOE-wide function serving many programs. The Office of Packaging and Transportation is currently situated within the Office of Environmental Management to support this DOE-wide function through several key initiatives.  We provide policy, budget, and program direction to the DOE complex on transportation and packaging activities.

We also are responsible for development and implementation of the Transportation Emergency Preparedness Program. Lastly, we support an important Departmental non-proliferation mission through our policy oversight of the nuclear fuel transportation program.

The NNSA Office of Secure Transportation manages transportation activities associated with highly guarded shipments of radioactive materials.
