About Specialist Certification
The purpose of AOTA Board Certification and Specialty Certification is to provide a framework for professional development that is specifically geared to occupational therapy. Occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants are challenged to communicate the immediate effectiveness of their interventions and demonstrate continuous professional growth. Through its Board Certification and Specialty Certification programs, AOTA provides formal recognition for those who have engaged in a voluntary process of ongoing, focused, and targeted professional development. Both programs are voluntary-neither certification is required for practice. For more information on how to become certified or available specialties log on to the AOTA board specialty website.
The mission of the Hand Therapy Certification Commission is to support a high level of competence in hand therapy practice and to advance the specialty through a formal credentialing process. It recognizes occupational therapists and physical therapists that have achieved an advanced level of professional knowledge in the practice of hand therapy and promotes professional development and continuing education in this area of practice. **Upon receiving certification from the AOTA or HTCC, USPHS Therapist Officers are entitled to NBCP pay (Non-physician board certified pay).To apply for board certified pay please refer to CCPM regulations.

Back to Top COURSE TITLE: Management of Combat Stress Casualties COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course prepares participants to work effectively in the six functional mission areas of Combat Stress Control (CSC). The intended audience is Army occupational therapy personnel but is open to other members of the military behavioral healthcare team (physician assistants, physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, mental health specialists, etc.). Going beyond typical classroom instruction, this course employs experiential learning via rotating leadership positions, student lead presentations, debriefings, and casualty management scenarios conducted during a field training exercise. Instruction is conducted under austere conditions at Camp Bullis, Texas. The course utilizes a scenario driven exercise, placing students in a notional CSC Detachment deployed to central Asia as part of a fictitious peacekeeping exercise that escalates into a high intensity conflict. From the time of reporting for training, students function in alternating staff and leadership positions as a member of a deployed CSC unit. Training also includes two days of instruction in "Critical Incident Stress Management - Basic Group Crisis Intervention" provided by instructors sanctioned by the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation. COURSE LOCATION: Camp Bullis, San Antonio, TX COURSE COST: Free tuition. Arrange with OPDIV to secure funds for transportation and 1st week of lodging. COMMENTS FROM ATTENDEES: The course was outstanding and exceptional! I would highly recommend it to any OT that expresses interest. The first week was held at the San Antonio Doubletree Hotel and consisted of 4.5 days of didatic education. The second week was held at Camp Bullis in a Field Training Exercise (FTX) setting. I found it to be an enlightening and completely worthwhile experience. It was fantastic and as long as MAJ Gonzales is leading the training I am certain the quality of the coruse will remain. The training is evidence-based and incorporates the latest in Army doctrine. I have the internet links to the training manuals if anyone would care to peruse the information prior to attendance. Also, I would be happy to impart whatever information may be helful to anyone contemplating attendance in the future. I would relish the opportunity to train again with the Army OTs I have met.
