Managing Intellectual Property: A Guide for Employees

This class is designed for all levels of Laboratory staff to help you identify your responsibilities in managing intellectual property and to focus your attention on the importance to the Laboratory of effective IP management. By properly protecting the Lab's intellectual property, we

  • enhance the reputation of the Laboratory,
  • attract sponsored research agreements,
  • generate royalty income,
  • create recruitment incentives, and
  • help LANS meet a contractual obligation to DOE.

This session outlines the processes for timely and effective identification of a new invention or copyright, disclosure, and integration of publication with IP protection. It provides an overview of the resources available in the Technology Transfer (TT) Division and Laboratory Counsel's Intellectual Property Office to help you with these processes.

SBIR/STTR Workshops:

SBIR/STTR Phase I Bootcamp (pdf)

Date: Wednesday, August 19, 2009
Time: 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Location: Santa Fe Business Incubator, Santa Fe, NM

The first day's workshop is packed full of so much information that it will make your brain hurt! Greenwood Consulting Group will bring you up to speed on the SBIR/STTR programs, and clarify their differences and similarities. They will lead you through a simple but effective four-step process for developing a competitive Phase 1 SBIR or STTR proposal. This is the "boot camp" version of their Phase 1 workshop, meaning there will be plenty of worksheets and opportunities for you to think about and start working on your SBIR/STTR proposal during the event. And that's just the first day!

Day 1 is sponsored by Northern New Mexico Connect. Please visit their Web site for registration information.

SBIR/STTR Phase II Commercialization (pdf)

Date: Thursday, August 20, 2009
Time: 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Location: Technology Ventures Corporation, Albuquerque, NM

On Day 2, the Greenwoods will provide a quick overview of Phase II of SBIR/STTR before delving into the all-important topic of commercialization of your innovation. They will not make you a commercialization expert in one day, but you will leave with a lot more understanding of how to analyze and predict the market opportunity (or lack thereof) for the SBIR/STTR project you are pursuing. Commercialization, or Phase III, is where you make money in an SBIR/STTR project, so you better know what you are doing and whether you are pursuing an innovation with commercial potential, or is it (as one agency rep put it) "just another expensive science fair project."

Day 2 is sponsored by Technology Ventures Corporation (TVC). Please visit their Web site for registration information.

Registration Fee: There is a registration fee of $35 per day or $60 if you sign up for both days. To register please visit sites specified above or the event registration site.

For specific questions, please contact Shandra Clow at LANL or Barbara Stoller at SNL.
