The GFDL Oceans and Climate Group consists of scientists focused on studying the fundamental mechanisms setting the large scale climate of the World Oceans. For this purpose, we employ a hierarchy of numerical and analytical models.

 As seen in the above animation of surface current speeds near Africa, the ocean is full of small-scale eddies. These eddies are important in establishing the ocean's circulation and tracer properties. Research at GFDL is aimed at better understanding and representation of the large-scale effects of these structures |
