Nuclear Facility Maintenance

The Office of Nuclear Safety and Environmental Policy develops rules, Orders, policy, technical standards, and guidance for nuclear facility maintenance activities at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

Generally, all DOE contractors are required to maintain and preserve government property in accordance with 48 CFR 45.509, Care, Maintenance and Use (of Government Property), and DOE O 430.1B, Real Property Asset Management (RPAM).

More rigorous maintenance programs are crucial at nuclear facilities to preserve the designed-in performance characteristics of mission critical and safety structures, systems and components (SSCs). Nuclear facility maintenance programs are based on the need to maintain the highest degree of reliability of safety SSCs that are derived from documented analysis required by 10 CFR 830, Subpart B.

The requirements for this level of rigorous maintenance are prescribed in DOE O 433.1, Maintenance Management Program for DOE Nuclear Facilities. Detailed guidance to satisfy the safety basis requirements of 10 CFR 830, Subpart B and DOE O 433.1 is provided in DOE G 433.1-1, Maintenance Management Program Guide for DOE Nuclear Facilities, and in associated technical standards for maintenance, training of personnel, and conduct of operations.
