Individual Occupational Requirements for
GS-493: Home Economics Series
The text below is extracted verbatim from
Section IV-B of the Operating Manual for Qualification Standards
for General Schedule Positions (p.IV-B-80), but contains minor edits
to conform to web-page requirements.
Use these individual occupational requirements in
conjunction with the "Group Coverage Qualification Standard for
Professional and Scientific Positions."
Basic Requirements:
- Degree: home economics; or a related discipline or field of science that
included at least 20 semester hours in or directly applicable to foods and
nutrition, home management and household economics, housing and household
equipment, textiles and clothing, or child and family development.
OR
- Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, or
at least 20 semester hours in home economics, as shown in A above, plus
appropriate experience or additional education.
Successful completion of a dietetic internship approved by the American Dietetic Association qualifies for
appointment at the GS-7 level to home economics positions that are concerned primarily with work in
nutrition, or in menu and food preparation.
