Klein Announces $168 Million Investment in Florida's Energy Efficiency

Washington, D.C.  – Today, Congressman Ron Klein (FL-22) announced a federal investment of over $168 million in Florida’s energy efficiency. This job-creating stimulus funding is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (H.R. 1). Today’s announcement detailed the $3.2 billion investment in energy efficiency and conservation projects across the country, as well as the $168,643,400 that will be available for state, county and city projects in Florida.

“This investment will have an immediate impact right here in South Florida,” Klein said. “The federal investment announced today will create jobs in the short term, cut energy bills for hard-working families, and move this country towards energy independence in the long run. It is a win-win-win for Floridians.”

Klein, the Co-Chairman of the New Democrat Coalition’s Energy Task Force, said that the federal funding announced today will support energy audits and energy efficiency retrofits in residential and commercial buildings, the development and implementation of advanced building codes and inspections, and the creation of financial incentive programs for energy efficiency improvements. Other activities eligible for use of grant funds include transportation programs that conserve energy, projects to reduce and capture methane and other greenhouse gas emissions from landfills, renewable energy installations on government buildings, energy efficient traffic signals and street lights, deployment of Combined Heat and Power and district heating and cooling systems, and others.

“This funding has been a top priority of our local elected officials, and I will continue to work closely with them, as well as business owners and community leaders, to ensure every dollar is spent creating jobs and jump-starting the economy in South Florida,” Klein said. “The energy efficient block grants that have been made available can be customized by state and local officials, and we will work to ensure that they are used efficiently and effectively. We are committed to distributing this funding in a transparent manner, and in order to ensure accountability, grant recipients will report on the number of jobs created or retained, energy saved and funds leveraged.”

The energy efficiency funding announced today is in addition to the $302, 073,474 in previously announced weatherization and energy funding for Florida. Please click here for a city-by-city breakdown.
