Former Federal Court Systems Administrator Sentenced for Hacking Into Government Computer System
Anchorage, Alaska - Anchorage resident Scott Dennis, former computer system administrator for the U.S. District Court in Alaska, was sentenced January 19, 2001, for interfering with a government-owned communications system.
Dennis was sentenced to six months incarceration to be served by three months in jail and three months home confinement, followed by one year of supervised release. Dennis must also allow authorities to monitor his computer activity, and perform 240 hours of community service.
Dennis was charged with launching three denial of service attacks against the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. The prosecution contended Dennis was upset at plans to allow more users into a restricted e-mail list server. Dennis overwhelmed the Eastern District's server with e-mail messages to prove it was vulnerable to outside attacks. He repeated this twice because he thought his hacking went unnoticed.
Dennis has already paid $5,300 in restitution to the New York Federal Court System, GCI and Internet Alaska. This case was investigated by the FBI and security officers at GCI and Internet Alaska.
