Current Activities

Steve has been the Deputy Director for the Alaska Fisheries Science Center’s Auke Bay Laboratories (ABL) since 2002. He provides the services of chief operating officer for ABL, guiding program planning and development, workforce development, administration, fiscal management, facilities oversight, information techonology and library systems oversight, and safety and environmental compliance actions. He has worked at ABL for 29 years and served as the Acting ABL Director for 9 months during his tenure as Deputy Director.


Background

Steve has a B.S. (physics) from the University of Washington and an M.S. (fisheries science) from the University of Alaska. He started his career with NOAA in 1980 as a biometrician before taking on the responsibilities in 1984 as the leader for the ABL squid driftnet research task. Following the United Nations-sponsored moratorium of squid driftnet fisheries, he led the creation of the Ocean Carrying Capacity program in 1994 and worked in that program until taking the Deputy Director position in 2002. He has served as a scientific advisor for the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission, International North Pacific Fisheries Commission, Pacific Salmon Commission, and the North Pacific Fishery Management Council.
