About the Department

The Erie County Department of Mental Health is comprised of two Divisions; the Division of Program Administration and the Division of Forensic Mental Health Services. The Department plans, administers and coordinates a countywide integrated system of comprehensive community based mental health, mental retardation, alcohol and substance abuse programs which provide adequate levels of quality service to individuals in need of care and treatment, or at risk of institutionalization. Services are provided on a contract basis by community based agencies, other County departments or directly by the Department's Forensic Mental Health Division.

The Department receives state aid reimbursement for a percentage of the direct cost of programs and administration. It also is the recipient of a number of State and Federal grants that are used to supplement the operating budget and provide mental health, alcoholism and substance abuse programs that, otherwise, could not be provided at the same level.
