Faculty Loan Repayment Program

About the Faculty Loan Repayment Program

The Faculty Loan Repayment Program helps eligible health professions faculty from disadvantaged backgrounds to repay their student loans. 

The Faculty Loan Repayment Program provides as much as $20,000 a year to eligible faculty members who apply to and are selected to receive funding from the program in return for a 2-year service commitment.

Participants should also receive matching funds from their employing educational institution. 

In addition, Faculty Loan Repayment Program participants receive a tax liability benefit.

Eligible Applicants
  • U.S. citizens or nationals (permanent residents are not eligible)
  • With a degree or enrolled in an approved graduate training program in an eligible discipline:
    • Allopathic Medicine
    • Osteopathic Medicine
    • Podiatric Medicine
    • Veterinary Medicine
    • Dentistry
    • Pharmacy
    • Optometry
    • Nursing (RN only)
    • Public Health
    • Behavioral and Mental Health (graduate level only)
      • Clinical Psychology
      • Clinical Social Work
      • Marriage and Family Therapy
    • Schools of Allied Health (baccalaureate or graduate degree programs)
      • Dental Hygiene
      • Medical Laboratory Technology
      • Occupational Therapy
      • Physical Therapy
      • Radiologic Technology
      • Speech Pathology
      • Audiology
      • Registered Dietitians
  • With an employment commitment for a full-time or part-time faculty position for a minimum of two years, beginning on or before September 30, 2009, from one of the following types of eligible schools:
    • Medicine
    • Osteopathic Medicine
    • Podiatric Medicine
    • Veterinary Medicine
    • Dentistry
    • Pharmacy
    • Nursing
    • Allied Health
    • Public Health
    • Schools offering graduate programs in behavioral and mental health
  • From a disadvantaged background, based on environmental or economic factors. 
Selection Criteria

Applicants with full-time employment at an eligible health professions school will be funded first. 

To the extent that funds remain available, applicants with part-time employment at an eligible health professions school will be funded.  Part-time participants will be funded based on the percentage of a full-time position he or she works.

On February 17, President Obama signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The Recovery Act provides additional funding for the Faculty Loan Repayment Program.

Due to the availability of additional funds, the Bureau of Clinician Recruitment and Service expects to recruit additional individuals from a disadvantaged background who have a health professions degree or certificate and are willing to serve as faculty members at an eligible health professions school for a minimum of 2 years.
