2008 High-Flow Experiment: Visitor Information

Very few Grand Canyon backcountry permit holders will be affected by the higher flows. Those camping along the river corridor during the high flow should plan ahead and prepare. Anyone with concern or question should contact the Backcountry Information Center as well as look for updated information at the Hermit, Bright Angel, South Kaibab and Grandview Trailheads.

All backcountry permit holders for Grand Canyon National Park camping on the river between March 2nd and 5th can find out more information by calling Grand Canyon National Park's Backcountry Permits Office (928) 638-7875 (Monday - Friday; 1pm to 5pm Arizona Time) or email grca_bic@nps.gov. All backcountry permit holders camping on the Colorado River should carefully pick a camp location at a greater distance from river's edge than normal.

Flow Schedule

Proposed flow schedule graph

Downstream arrival and end dates/times for potential high-flow experimental release of water from Glen Canyon Dam (flows above 40,000 cubic feet per second) by river mile between the dam (river mile -15) and Diamond Creek (river mile 226), Arizona. Arrival and end times are subject to uncertainties of approximately +/- 3 hours. Prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey.
