International Workshops Addressing the Age Determination of Walleye Pollock (Theragra chalcogramma)

Two international workshops have been held in an attempt to reach consensus on the best method to age walleye pollock. The first workshop was held in Gdynia, Poland, in 1990 and concluded:  "The participants at this workshop unanimously agreed that under our present knowledge that the break and burn method provides the best method for ageing walleye pollock."

The second meeting held in Seattle, Washington, in 1998 was held under the auspices of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of the Pollock Resources in the Central Bering Sea. Both workshops involved fairly extensive exchanges of samples aged by participating countries. Results from these exchanges indicate ages from broken and burnt otoliths appeared similar even when nations possessed various levels of expertise and very little previous calibration occurred.
