TVA To Hold Open House on Proposed Transmission Line Project

April 5, 2006

EAGLEVILLE, Tenn. – TVA will hold an open house Tuesday, April 11, to hear public comments on a proposed new transmission project in Middle Tennessee to meet the electrical demand of the area, which is growing at a rate of 3.5 percent a year.

The project includes a new substation and about 50 miles of connecting transmission lines. TVA proposes to build a 500-kilovolt substation on about 65 acres in southwest Rutherford County and four transmission line connections, which include

  • 27 miles of new 500-kV line on existing right-of-way that has never been used and extends from the proposed new Rutherford substation to the existing Maury substation near Columbia in Maury County
  • 7 miles of new 161-kV line on vacant, TVA-owned right-of-way from the proposed Rutherford substation north to the existing Almaville substation near the junction of Rocky Fork Road and Almaville Road
  • 13 miles of 161-kV line on new, 100-foot right-of-way from the proposed Rutherford substation to the Christiana substation near U.S. Highway 231 and Walnut Grove Roa
  • 2.5 miles of 161-kV line on new right-of-way from the proposed Rutherford substation to connect to an existing TVA transmission line known as the Murfreesboro-Triune-East Franklin line.

The Middle Tennessee area to be served by the substation and new transmission lines currently uses more than 1000 megawatts of electrical power, which is close to the output of one TVA nuclear unit.

TVA will present alternatives for the substation site and transmission line routes at the open house to be held from 2-8 p.m. CDT at Eagleville High School, 500 Highway 99, in Eagleville.

Detailed maps showing the alternatives are available, and TVA staff will be available to answer questions, discuss potential concerns and receive comments on the proposals.
