GFDL to Host International AeroCom Workshop

Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) will host the 8th annual AeroCom Workshop, featuring seminars and posters related to aerosol research.  The event will be held at GFDL, in Princeton, NJ, from October 5-7, 2009.  AeroCom is an international initiative of scientists working to advance our understanding of global aerosol and its impact on climate.

This year’s workshop will be organized around seven topics: aerosol modeling for the next IPCC report, secondary organics, aerosol absorption, indirect effects, microphysics, and aerosol distribution.  An outline of the program is available on the Workshop’s web site.

Registration is currently open to anyone proposing a seminar or poster.  Oral presentations and posters which are most relevant to the topics of the workshop will be selected by the organizing committee, and attendance will be limited to those giving seminars or presenting posters.

GFDL scientist Paul Ginoux is on the organizing committee this year, with colleagues from Max Planck Institute, the Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat and de l'Environment, and NASA.

AeroCom has enabled scientists to assemble a large number of observations and results from a global model intercomparison, in order to obtain reliable estimates of the present and future aerosol impact on climate and air quality.  The initiative is supported by Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (France), Max-Planck Institute (Germany), and NASA (USA). Previous workshops have been held in Iceland, France, Norway, Italy, and the U.S.
