GAO has added the United States Postal Service’s
financial condition to its High-Risk List, bringing to 31 the number of areas
GAO has identified this year as vulnerable to fraud, waste, abuse, and mismanagement,
as well as, increasingly, areas in need of broad reform.
The list is generated from GAO’s High-Risk Series, a biennial
report to Congress on major problems costing the federal government billions
of dollars annually. The 2009 High-Risk Series, published in January,
included new areas covering the financial crisis, medical products, and toxic
chemicals. GAO also determined that sufficient progress had been made to
remove the high-risk designation from the Federal Aviation Administration's
air traffic control modernization.
GAO's recommendations to improve these programs could lead to billions
of dollars in savings for the federal government, dramatically improve service
to the public, and strengthen confidence in the performance and accountability
of the federal government.
