President Obama, Secretary Salazar Lead Celebration of Interior’s 160th Anniversary
WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama and Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar marked the 160th Anniversary of the Department of the Interior today in a ceremony at the Yates Auditorium in the Main Interior Building. In addition to the 600 employees who packed the auditorium to watch the event, department employees around the nation watched via satellite broadcast or listened via teleconference bridge. New Technology Adds Dimension to USS Arizona Memorial
The National Park Service is adding new dimension to research and visitor experience at the USS Arizona Memorial by capturing the submerged battleship in three-dimensional, high-definition imagery.

The USS Arizona, as it now rests submerged in Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu, has become a symbol of one of the 20th century’s most pivotal events. Nearly 1.5 million people make the journey to the USS Arizona Memorial each year to understand and contemplate the events of Dec 7, 1941. It’s an arduous hike to get into the headwaters of the North Fork Frying Pan River, and the payoff is tremendous. Colorado River cutthroat trout swim these waters, and I’ve gone there with some frequency over the years, just over the mountain from my Denver home.

It’s a tiny creek, where wearing waders is over-dressing. Willow whips in places arch over the water; they make shade, cooling the creek, and they drop bugs into the water. Trout like that. Stealth, a three-weight rod and a bow cast is the order of the day. more
