TVA to Test Warning System at Kingston Plant

May 10, 2002

KINGSTON, Tenn. — Residents near TVA’s Kingston Fossil Plant may hear alarms from a new emergency notification system being installed and tested at the power plant between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday, May 13, through Friday, May 17.

Local community and law enforcement officials have been notified of the alarm testing. Persons should ignore alarms from the site during the testing period and not report them to 911 emergency dispatchers.

The new alarm system is designed to warn employees in the event of an emergency at the plant and is capable of producing three different tones as well as voice messages.

Kingston Fossil Plant is located on Watts Bar Reservoir near Kingston, Tenn. The plant generates about 10 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity a year, enough to supply more than 700,000 homes.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power producer, and its power system is self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve 8.3 million consumers in seven southeastern states.
