TVA Watershed Team to Give Away Trees

March 18, 2002

Members of TVA’s Chickamauga-Nickajack Watershed Team will give away native trees to local residents on Wednesday, March 20, beginning at 9 a.m. at the TVA Power Service Center, located on the north side of Chickamauga Dam.

Planting trees is one of the easiest and most effective ways to improve the environment. Trees benefit the environment by using carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas; by stabilizing eroded lands, including stream banks and shorelines; and by providing habitat and food for birds and other wildlife.

The trees will be available on a first-come, first-served basis and were selected for their environmental benefits, attractiveness, and suitability for native landscaping. The trees available this year are:
American beautyberry
American hornbeam (ironwood)
Bald cypress
Buttonbush
False indigo
Hazel alder
River birch
Silky dogwood
Spicebush
Water oak
Witch hazel.

Directions to the TVA Power Service Center: From Highway 153 North, take the Access Road exit and enter the TVA Power Service Center complex near the large TVA water tower. Follow the signs to Building B. For additional information, contact RaSharon King at 423-697-6003.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power producer, and its power system is self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve 8.3 million consumers in seven southeastern states.
