TVA to Hold Community Workshop on Reservoir Operations Study

March 19, 2002

RINGGOLD, Ga. — TVA will hold a community workshop on Thursday, March 21, to hear comments from the public on the scope of a study that will determine whether potential changes in TVA’s reservoir operating policies would provide greater value to the region.

The workshop to discuss TVA’s Reservoir Operations Study will be held from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m at the Colonnade-Catoosa Civic Center, 264 Catoosa Circle, in Ringgold. TVA staff will be available to discuss how the integrated river system now operates.

“As TVA conducts this study, we need to hear from people about what uses of the water they and the communities in which they live care about most,” said Reservoir Operations Study Project Manager David Nye. “Whether you live on the shores of a TVA reservoir or never go near the water, you benefit from how TVA operates the river system.”

In operating the Tennessee River system, TVA meets several needs, including flood-risk reduction, year-round navigation, affordable electricity, improved water quality, economic growth, water supply, and recreation.

“Everyone in the Tennessee Valley is affected by the balance of benefits and trade-offs in how the water is used,” Nye said.

The Reservoir Operations Study is expected to take two years. The study will be conducted in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act and be documented in an environmental impact statement.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power producer, and its power system is self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve 8.3 million consumers in seven southeastern states.
