TVA Seeks Comments on New Wind Farm, Energy Storage Plant

January 9, 2002

OLIVER SPRINGS, Tenn.—TVA will host a public meeting to seek comments and discuss a draft environmental assessment of a wind farm and energy storage plant that TVA is considering building on Buffalo Mountain, near Oliver Springs.

The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, January 17, at the Norwood Middle School at 669 East Tri-County Boulevard in Oliver Springs.

As part of its program to develop renewable energy sources, TVA is considering Buffalo Mountain as one of two sites suitable for the construction of 14 wind turbines. TVA also is considering a site near Mountain City, Tennessee. TVA currently operates three wind turbines on top of Buffalo Mountain.

The proposed new wind farm would provide a minimum of 20 megawatts of additional wind power for TVA’s Green Power Switch® program, which is a renewable energy initiative that offers Tennessee Valley consumers a choice in the type of power they buy.
Wind energy adds to TVA’s existing power mix and provides a choice for consumers seeking a cleaner technology that creates no air pollution and helps sustain resources for future generations.

TVA also is considering the possibility of building an energy storage plant near the proposed wind turbine site that would be used to store electricity during periods of low demand and release it during periods of high electricity demand.

The draft environmental assessment is available for viewing at local libraries or on the TVA Web site: www.tva.com/environment/reports. To receive a copy of the draft assessment, send a request to Anita Rose, Tennessee Valley Authority, P.O. Box 1649, Norris, TN 37828, or e-mail her at tvainfo@tva.gov (Attn. Anita Rose). Comments may also be sent to her.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power producer, and its power system is self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve 8.3 million consumers in seven southeastern states.
