TVA Identifies Preferred Route for Alvaton Transmission Line

October 7, 2008

ALVATON, Ky. – TVA has identified a preferred route for a new transmission line that will provide a reliable source of power to the growing Alvaton area.

The preferred route for the line begins at TVA’s existing East Bowling Green - South Scottsville 161-kilovolt transmission line, about three-fourths of a mile south of the intersection of Old Scottsville Road and Greenhill Bays Fork Road. It extends west southwest for about four miles to Warren Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation’s new substation in Alvaton. The substation is located on the east side of U. S. Highway 231, about five miles south of Exit 22 on Interstate 65.

The four-mile route is expected to have the fewest overall impacts of the alternatives studied.

The route affects approximately 18 tracts of property along four miles of new right-of-way. TVA will work with property owners to obtain 100-foot easements for construction, operation and maintenance of the line. Property owners will be compensated for the easements at fair market value and retain possession of the property.

TVA is expected to begin acquiring easements for the transmission right-of-way during the summer of 2009. Construction is scheduled to begin during the winter of 2009-2010 with project scheduled for completion in the spring of 2010.

TVA’s decision follows the receipt and evaluation of public input on alternative route segments. TVA’s objective in determining a route is to select the best overall path, weighing the same environmental, land use, engineering, cultural, and cost considerations to ensure that overall project impacts, as well as impacts to the community at large, are minimized.

A map of the project and additional information are available.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 159 power distributors that serve approximately 8.8 million consumers in seven southeastern states. TVA also manages the Tennessee River and its tributaries to provide multiple benefits, including flood damage reduction, navigation, water quality and recreation.
