Landscapers, Gardeners Targeted with New Native Plant Web Site

Nov. 19, 2003

Landscapers and gardeners across the Tennessee Valley can select the right native plants and trees for their property with the help of TVA’s new Native Plant Selector Web site.

More than 140 plants and photos are featured on the Web site, and details such as height, light requirements, moisture conditions, and bloom time for each plant are available. Users may also access information that will help them assess their property, design a landscape, or take care of native plants.

Native plants may be searched for in several ways. Users may browse a list of plants by common or scientific name, enter a key word to find a group of specific plants, or select criteria to find plants that meet their needs.

“TVA encourages the use of native plants in the landscape,” said TVA Vice President of Resource Stewardship Bridgette Ellis. “Once plants are established, they require little or no maintenance, which saves time and money. Native plants produce berries, nuts, and seeds that support wildlife, and they help to preserve the botanical heritage of the Tennessee Valley.”
